On Thursday Evening, October 20, students, faculty and staff of Tunxis Community College were treated to an evening of poetry, art, and music. This event, coordinated by Sandra Kovach, Instructor of English and Communications, was co-sponsored by the Departments of English and Art.
Guests enjoyed the music of Faculty musicians Kevin O’Neil and John Timmons on guitar and Paula Baird and Tracy Norkun (recent Tunxis Graduate) on flute, as well as a selection by student Christian Torres who sang and accompanied himself on guitar.
Judy Minor once again transformed Founders Hall into a colorful coffeehouse-like venue and, along with Rich of our own Corner Café, provided a sumptuous selection of appetizers, pizza, drinks and dessert to be enjoyed while viewing the art and sculpture of Tunxis art students.
The highlight of the evening was a poetry reading by keynote speaker and published poet, Benjamin Grossberg, Professor of English at the University of Hartford, recipient of numerous awards and winner of the annual CT Poetry Circuit Contest. Following his reading, Ben remained to sign his most recent book, Sweet Core Orchard, which was available for purchase.
The evening ended with an Open Mic session during which current and former Tunxis students and faculty read original poetry or performed original Rap. The event, which was well-attended, is the most recent offering of the Humanities Enrichment series of activities provided to fulfill the cultural and Fine Arts Mission of the College.
