Tunxis’ third Forum on News Media took place on November 30. The topic this year was “Rescuing Newspapers During Troubled Times.” The participants were  Michael Schroeder, publisher of The Bristol Press and The (New Britain) Herald and James Smith, executive editor of the two publications.Professor Bob Brown participated as moderator, facilitator and organizer of the program.

Schroeder and Smith are the top news executives of Central Connecticut Communication, which took over management of the two newspapers in January 2009 when they were literally within days of being closed by their former owner, the Journal Register Company, which was in bankruptcy.
Under the new management and ownership, the two newspapers have been able to stem more than a decade of circulation losses accumulated under JRC.  They have done so by emphasizing local reporting and commentary. Perhaps most remarkably, The Herald was named in October as the best small newspaper in New England by the New England Newspaper and Press Association

On November 29, 2010 there was  a panel discussion on God’s Existence and the Meaning of Religion. Sharing the panel with Professor Jesse Abbot were student panelists Jonathan Blais, Darren Bruno, and Daniel Castro. It made for an entertaining event that was also an exercise in critical thinking.

On Wednesday, November 10th at 3:00, Librarian Rachel Hyland and Dr. Rafaele Fierro held a panel discussion on Andrew Carnegie’s essay Gospel of Wealth. This event was sponsored by a newly created group, The Tunxis Humanities Athenaeum. Professor Bob Brown  agreed to be a moderator/panelist for the event. The topic has great relevance to the role of the wealthy in today’s America.
